Jostedalsbreen Large Box
The Jostedal Glacier is the largest glacier on the European mainland, accounting for 20% of the mainland's glacier area.
The glacier is located in Vestland County, spanning the municipalities of Luster, Sogndal, Sunnfjord, and Stryn, as well as Skjåk in Innlandet.
The highest point of the Jostedal Glacier is Høgste Breakulen at 1,952 meters above sea level. The highest mountain near the glacier is Lodalskåpa at 2,083 meters above sea level. Several glacier tongues extend far down into the valleys, including , Bøyabree in Fjærland, and Nigardsbreen, both reaching approximately 300 moh.
The Jostedal Glacier is not a remnant of the last ice age, but was formed approximately 1,000–2,000 years ago. Its size has fluctuated greatly, with a major advance occurring around 1745.
Since 2000, the glacier has decreased in volume due to warm summers. Several glacier tongues, such as the Nigardsbreen and Briksdalsbreen, have retreated significantly since the 1990s.
The glacier area is a major tourist attraction offering opportunities for hiking, glacier walks, and visitor centers, such as the one in Fjærland.
