Jostedal Glacier large box
Jostedalsbreen is the largest glacier on the European mainland, accounting for 20% of the mainland's glaciated area.
The glacier is located in Vestland county, spread across the municipalities of Luster, Sogndal, Sunnfjord and Stryn, as well as Skjåk in Innlandet.
Jostedalsbreen's highest point is Høgste Breakulen at 1952 meters above sea level. The highest mountain near the glacier is Lodalskåpa at 2083 meters above sea level. Several glacier arms extend far down into the valleys, including Bøyabreen in Fjærland and Nigardsbreen, both to approximately 300 meters above sea level.
Jostedalsbreen is not a remnant of the last ice age, but was formed approximately 1000–2000 years ago. It has experienced significant fluctuations in size, with a major advance around 1745.
Since 2000, the glacier has decreased in volume due to warm summers. Several glacier arms, such as Nigardsbreen and Briksdalsbreen, have retreated significantly since the 1990s.
The glacier area is a major tourist attraction with opportunities for hiking, glacier walking and visitor centers, for example in Fjærland.
