Preikestolen is a mountain plateau on the north side of Lysefjorden in Strand Municipality in Rogaland. Preikestolen is a nearly flat mountain plateau, approximately 25, × 25, m, and features a vertical cliff 604, meters down to Lysefjorden.
Preikestolen is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Ryfylke region and in Norway. The plateau offers a great view of the Lysefjord and the surrounding moors.
In the old days, the plateau was called “ ” “Hyvlatonnå,” and “ ” (“høveltanna”).
Preikestolen is one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions, drawing more than 400,000 visitors a year.
Elevation Gain and Distance: The hike begins at Preikestolen Fjellstue, approximately 120 meters above sea level, and ends at 604 meters. The total elevation gain is approximately 672 meters, with a round-trip distance of about 8 kilometers.
Difficulty level: The hike is considered moderate and usually takes 3–4 hours round trip for most hikers.
